You will need prepared

1/4" straight bias strips:

*2 - for the bird legs - 1 1/2" long

*2 - for tree branches - 1 3/4" long

after one end is pressed under.

You will need a prepared 3/8"

straight strip for above

the side addition roof trim

it should measure 5 1/2" long

after one end is pressed under.

You will need prepared

1/2" straight bias

*2 - for the tree trunks

one should measure 5" long

and the other should measure 3" long

after just one end is pressed under.

*1 forthe chimney top

it should measure 2" after

both ends are pressed under

You will need a 1" prepared

straightbias strip for the front porch.

Press both ends under and

it should now measure 2 1/2" long after.

Cut your background

14" x 16"

and sew it to the 3 1/2" x 16" grass

pressing the seams open.

Now press in half for

pinning and glue basting your block:)

Okay let's get started!!

Home Town Sew Along - Week Three - Bird House Tutorial!! (12)

Before you sew the Q-50 Bird shape

you will need to sew these fabrics together.

Use a 1/4" seam allowance and sew the

square for the beak on the top left side.

Press the seams open.

Home Town Sew Along - Week Three - Bird House Tutorial!! (13)

You can tell exactly where

the beakneeds to go...

now sew the shape as per usual!

Home Town Sew Along - Week Three - Bird House Tutorial!! (14)

Sew all the rest of the shapes and trim.

Before turning clip the cleavage areas

in the trees... shrubs...

chimneyand the bird.

Home Town Sew Along - Week Three - Bird House Tutorial!! (15)

All turned...shaped and pressed:)

Home Town Sew Along - Week Three - Bird House Tutorial!! (16)

I glued some of the shapestogether

before pinning them to the design board.

I glued the strip on top of the chimney

and the roof on top of the side addition.

I glued the short trunk behind the

left tree and it measures 2 1/4" long.

I glued the tall trunk 3" down from

the top of theright tree and tucked the

side branches underneath the trunk.

I also glued the bird wing and legs.

Home Town Sew Along - Week Three - Bird House Tutorial!! (17)

I glued the roof onto the house

and together they measure 9 1/2" tall.

I glued the chimney on top of the house 1 /2" in from the right and it

measures 2 1/2" above the roofline.

I glued the topper onto the door and

I also glued the front porch about

1/4" up onto the bottom of the door.

Together it now measures 6" tall.

I used my ruler to keep everything straight.

Back view:)

Next place the house onto your background.

This house IS NOT in the center

but the left side of the chimney is!

Use your center pressed crease

to line it up...and place the bottom

of house 3/4" into the grass.

Home Town Sew Along - Week Three - Bird House Tutorial!! (20)

Now it's time to build a

side addition to our house!

It should measure 3" wide after

tucking it under the side right side

and be even with the house bottom.

Home Town Sew Along - Week Three - Bird House Tutorial!! (21)

I tucked the tree trunk under the top

of the new addition so that the top

of the tree is 1/4" taller than the roof

and the left side of tree trunk is

1 3/4" away from the right side of house.

Home Town Sew Along - Week Three - Bird House Tutorial!! (22)

Next I placed the door 5/8" in

from the left side of house.

The bottom of the DOOR (not porch)

lines upwith the bottom of the house.

Home Town Sew Along - Week Three - Bird House Tutorial!! (23)

Now let's install the windows!

I placed the windows 2" up from the bottom of the house and 1/2" in from the

right side of house and the

right side of the door.

Top row of windows are spaced 3 /4"

apartfrom the bottom row.

Home Town Sew Along - Week Three - Bird House Tutorial!! (24)

I measured up 2 1/4"

from the bottom of the addition and

1/2" in from the right side of house

and installed the last window.

Home Town Sew Along - Week Three - Bird House Tutorial!! (25)

I planted the shrubs 1/4"

down on the bottom of the house:)

Now let's plant the other tree

on the left side of the house!

Home Town Sew Along - Week Three - Bird House Tutorial!! (26)

The tree trunk is planted 1 1/4"

from the side of the house

and is 1/4" down into the grass.

Home Town Sew Along - Week Three - Bird House Tutorial!! (27)

Now it's time for the bird

to fly up on the rooftop!

Tuck his legs underneath the roof

and about 1/2" in from edge.

Sunbonnet Sue says that it

should measure 12" tall

from the tip of the wing to the

TOP of the front porch:)

Now you can Sue Glue everything down

and then check your measurements

using the 14 1/2" Trim-It Ruler.

and

it's ready for applique!!!!

I included a house with trees and

a birdbecause that was simply my childhood:)

We had lots of trees to climb in my yard

and climb them I did!!

When you have a lot of trees...

you have a lot of birds

and I loved watching them and feeding them

and listening to their songs...

(and I still do)
