This sweet fella right here is the inspiration behind this easy recipe for homemade dog treats. You see, my Corgi...well, he is a little...plump. Don't get me wrong, he gets a lot of exercise during the day, but boy does he love to eat.

However, he's getting a little lower to the ground every day, with his fluffy belly and those short legs. So we are easing Dewey (that's my boy) into a grain-free diet to help him shed a few pounds.

Here are some shots of Dewey enjoying his FAVORITE exercise. Napping.Oh yes, this handsome dog loves his naps. He'll cuddle up with anyone and sleeps in every position.

So back to our mission of getting Dewey on a grain-free diet. First stop is PetSmart. We picked up a couple different varieties of Purina® dog food. His favorite? Purina® Pro Plan Grain Free Shredded Blend in the Turkey, Duck and Quail flavor combination.

(And yes, he told me it is his favorite.)

I also picked up Purina ONE True Instinct to give Dewey more variety in his diet.

If you don't have time to make your own homemade dog treats, no worries. PetSmart has a variety of dog treats for any dog, big or small.

How to Make Sweet Potato Homemade Dog Treats

Even though Dewey is going on a diet, we still want to treat him. He loves sweet potatoes, so this grain-free dog treat recipe is perfect.

  1. In a bowl, mash cooked sweet potatoes with a fork until the big lumps are gone.
  2. Stir in two eggs until the mixture is smooth.
  3. Add coconut flour and work the flour into the sweet potato mixture until crumbly.
  4. Gather the sweet potato "dough" together and roll out to ¼ inch thickness
  5. Using a cookie cutter, cut out shapes and place on a lightly greased baking sheet.
  6. Bake and cool.

The best part about the Sweet Potato Homemade Dog Treats? They are good for him and I know exactly what is in them.

  • Sweet Potato - loads of vitamins and full of fiber
  • Eggs - great source of protein
  • Coconut Flour - high in fiber, low in sugar, good source of healthy fat

Be sure to dust your working surface and rolling pin with a little extra coconut flour to keep the sweet potato dough from sticking. If the dough is too wet, sprinkle in more flour. If it gets too dry, a little water will fix it.

You can use cute animal shapes, hearts, whatever you have. Or you can use a pizza cutter or knife to cut them into squares.

Don't over bake the treats. In my oven, they took about 15 minutes. Cooking times will vary slightly based on the thickness you roll the treats and your oven. Watch them, and when the edges and bottoms are golden and browned, it is time to take them out and let them cool.

This recipe makes about 24 dog treats, and can be easily doubled. Store the completely cooled treats in a jar or treat container. As you can see, Dewey is patiently waiting to try these.

He is always around when I'm cooking food for the blog in the kitchen. He likes it when I drop food bits in the floor. Imagine his surprise when he realized I made these just for him and he didn't have to settle for crumbs!

Dewey loves his homemade dog treats! (I have to confess, he loves everything.)

  • 1 sweet potato, cooked small, about 1 cup
  • 2 eggs
  • ¾ cup coconut flour plus more for dusting

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Very lightly spray a baking sheet.

  • Bake for approximately 15 - 18 minutes until the bottoms are browned and edges are golden.
