ABSTRACT. Seasonal mortality in capybaras (Hydrocho*rus hydrochaeris) and its relationship with resource availability in the Iberá wetlands, Argentina. The capybara (Hydrocho*rus hydrochaeris) is a semi-aquatic rodent that inhabits the tropical, subtropical and temperate lowland wetlands of South America. We analyzed mortality of a population of capybaras and its relation to resource availability in two contrasting climatichydrological seasons in an area free from hunting pressure in the Iberá wetlands of Argentina. The number, age and sex of dead individuals was determined in late summer and in winter based on dead individuals and bone material collection on fourteen 3-km transects. The age category of dead individuals was estimated based on the degree of ossification of cranial sutures, and sex of adults by the width of the incisors. The age structure and the sex ratio of social groups in the population was estimated by direct observation in 18 randomly selected social groups, and seasonal variation in the availability of food and shelter were estimated. The capybaras are the biggest rodents in the world but, however, there are not extensive population genetics studies on them. In the current work, we studied the genetic structure of a troop of 31 capybaras (Hydrocho*rus hydrochaeris) sampled in Hato Corozal, Casanare Department at the Colombian Eastern Llanos, by means of five microsatellite markers. The gene diversity was 0.61 and the average allele number was 5.2, which is a medium-low level for markers of this nature. Out five markers employed, three were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium meanwhile one showed a significant hom*ozygote excess and other presented a significant heterozygote excess. There were not significant genetic differences between males and females inside this troop. Capybara (Hydrocho*rus hydrochaeris) is the world largest rodent and a typical mammal of the phytogeographical provinces of Pampa and Espinal, inhabiting the eastern sector of the same. These regions have been categorized by the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) as “critical/endangered threatened” and are assigned the highest priority level of conservation as a result of habitat destruction, overexploitation, pollution and introduction of exotic species. The capybara has a marked preference for environments with permanent water where the marsh vegetation provides food and shelter. Thus, both water bodies as associated vegetation is critical to the prevalence of populations of capybaras in a given environment. In Santa Fe province, records are not very abundant, registering until now about 33 points based on collected and observed specimens, most located in the center and north of the province. The aim of this contribution is to present new records of capybara in Carcarañá river basin (south of Santa Fe province), and its association with some climatic-environmental variables, and evaluate the distribution of this species. Finally, we discussed the possible expansion or migration of this species to the west of Santa Fe and Buenos Aires provinces.

Dinâmica e biologia de uma população de capivaras em ambiente antrópico, Curitiba-PR Dynamics and biology of a population of capybara in anthropic environment, Curitiba-PR

Resumo Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo acompanhar a evolução de uma população de capivaras presente em uma área verde urbana da capital do Estado do Paraná. Através de observações e da contagem direta dos animais, foram obtidos dados referentes ao tamanho da população, proporção de machos, de fêmeas e de animais solitários, além de tamanho e composição de grupos. Foram analisadas a densidade bruta dos quatro anos amostrados (2008 a 2011) e o número de capivaras e a variação sazonal da população durante os dois últimos anos de estudo (2010 e 2011). Os resultados obtidos indicaram que a redução da população ao longo do tempo pode estar relacionada ao controle de crescimento populacional, sendo verificado prin-cipalmente pela diminuição do número de filhotes e pela dispersão de animais para áreas vizinhas. Também se pode observar que a densidade na área de estudo corresponde a de ambientes sob influência humana, que a proporção de machos solitários é menor que em ambiente natural e que a proporção entre machos e fêmeas é semelhante a de ambientes mais preservados. Além disso, foi verificado maior número de capivaras no período mais seco de Curitiba, no outono. Conclui-se que a estrutura e composição da população de capivaras no Parque Municipal do Tingui são muito semelhantes a dos animais que vivem em áreas mais preservadas. Abstract This research aimed to follow the evolution of a capybara population present in an urban green area of the capital of the State of Paraná. By direct counting of animals and observing behavior, data were obtained for the population size, proportion of males, female sand solitary animals, and size and composition of groups. We analyzed the gross density of the four sampled years (2008 to 2011) and the number of capybaras and seasonal variation in population during the last two years of study (2010 and 2011). The results indicated that reducing the population over time may be related to the control of population growth being checked primarily by decreasing the number of pups and the dispersal of animals to neighboring areas. It can also be seen that the density in the study area corresponds to human environment sunder the influence that the proportion of solitary male is lower than in the natural environment and that the ratio between males and females is similar to most environments preserved. Furthermore, it was found more capybaras during the drier period of Curitiba, in the fall. We conclude that the structure and composition of the population of capybaras in Municipal Park Tingui are very similar to the animals that live in the most preserved areas.

Determinants of capybara presence in afforestations of the lower delta of the Paraná river, Argentina

The delta of the Paraná River in Argentina represents the southernmost stronghold for capybaras (Hydrocho*rus hydrochaeris), but this area is highly modified due to commercial afforestations with Salicaceae. Water management (e.g. drainage of marshes) and land protections (e.g. polders) are carried out to improve field conditions for developing afforestations. To assess determinants of capybara presence within polder afforestations, its presence was surveyed in 2011–2013 along with 35 habitat and human-related variables at two spatial scales, in 53 watercourse-side sites. Using logistic regression, a habitat model was developed. Capybaras were present in 52.8% of sites. Water depth at the center of the watercourse had the strongest positive effect on capybara presence, followed by cover of reed marshes and cover of grass bush on the banks. Cover of adult poplar plantations showed a significant negative effect on capybara presence. Watercourses within polder afforestations can provide habitat for capybaras, although their use by these rodents depends on factors interacting at different scales.
